Rickmansworth Players support The Peace Hospice

The Executive Management Team of Rickmansworth Players has announced its support for another local organisation that again has a particular and direct link with our members, patrons and their families. In the recent past Jessie Wright, Hon Treasurer for many years, and Tracey Oakley, chaperone and wife to past Chairman Tim Oakley, have spent their final weeks at Watford Peace Hospice.

Tim Oakley writes:

"In the months that I have come to know The Peace Hospice, my opinion of them has grown immensely. I regard them as the service that takes over when the NHS can do no more (is not allowed to do more) and cancer sufferers and their families are left to their own devices at a time when they need emotional and physical support. It puts in place a local dignity service where the national health service stops. All of this does not come cheaply, and the majority of the funding is by voluntary donation. Funding for buildings and maintenance, specialist nurses and doctors, equipment and support services etc. are 75% through voluntary donation. As The Peace Hospice's web site states (in a rather low key way):

'The Peace Hospice based in Watford, provides a warm, friendly and supportive environment in which patients and their families are always made to feel welcome.'

"The environment that I've experienced is that of a domestic home environment, both for out-patients having day care and in-patients, to make the difficult final months, weeks and days just a little more bearable. Rooms are all kitted out to be warm and friendly yet hygienic. The maintenance of such is not cheap, and equipment always needs repairing, replacing and updating."

'We have a specialist team of doctors, nurses, bereavement counsellors, social workers and therapists who use their expertise and skills to care for people with a terminal illness and provide support for their families and carers across South West Hertfordshire.'

"Every single one of the professional and support staff that I've come across are brilliant and worth every penny of the voluntarily supported salaries that they receive. Such expertise should not be paid for on the cheap, so the salary burden should not be allowed to be a problem."

'Over 75% of the Hospice's funding comes from charitable donations and all the care that we provide to our patients and their families is completely free.'

"The care that The Peace Hospice provides, whilst free to the recipients, is priceless in terms of value to the sufferers, carers and families."
